Why Are GaN Chargers So Good?

When you looking for a new charger, you'll often see a term—GaN or gallium nitride—popping up in features and product names.

Chargers made with gallium nitride can be smaller than silicon ones. For most people, the smaller, the better.

Although the tech is pretty new and it’s a relatively small field, you still can find the best GaN chargers with Power Delivery charging here today.

What is gallium nitride?

Gallium nitride (aka GaN) is a semiconductor that can be used to produce chips for electronics, in a similar way to silicon.

GaN chip

As the main material used for chip production, silicon has its properties limits on thermal and electrical transfer. That means it will be harder for chip producers to work with it.

Driven by the intensifying competition for smaller chip production processes, the producers have to look to other materials that could be used for processor creation in different ways.

Currently, GaN is the best candidate to take over from silicon, mainly because of its band gap efficiency.

The band gap refers to the electrical conductivity of a material. The wider the band gap, the higher the voltages can be used without issue.

Why is gan superior to silicon?

GaN has a wider band gap than silicon, meaning it can sustain higher voltages. And the current can run through a GaN chip faster than a silicon one, which could result in even faster processing.

As a result, GaN is more efficient as energy is easier to pass through and less power is required to offer similar benefits.

Also, GaN loses less energy, which means the chips could be constructed smaller, saving on material in its production and possibly physical size.

With the high voltage capacity and the ability to sustain high temperatures, GaN is well suited for systems involving power transfers (such as chargers) and can be mounted in places where heat isn't as much of an issue.

What does GaN have to do with chargers?

Since GaN components can transfer more power, producers can make things more compact than their silicon counterparts.

Instead of relying on multiple silicon components, they can pack more GaN components in the same area to make the charger smaller.

To consumers, they can expect GaN chargers to be smaller than current chargers. They can also expect some that keep the same size but can power more devices simultaneously, as well as being able to charge high-Watt devices like MacBooks with ease.

Perfect travel charger

Bought as a travel charger for my MacBook Air and my iPhone, nice not having to carry two chargers. This charger works great! Have had both devices on it and charges my iPhone from about 20% to full in about 45 minutes and the MacBook from about 10% to full in about an hour. Highly recommend!

It is a game changer

I travel for work and used to carry four charging bricks. This has replaced the bricks and has made me lazy about charging my devices. I can charge devices lightning fast, no longer strategically charging my devices all night. If you have multiple devices that need power this is a game changer.
